How are you now?

How are you now?

No, Really, how are YOU?
Have you checked in with your physical and mental health lately?
.
If you have read my bio, you will know I am still a fairly New Amputee and I am still learning day-to-day stuff on how to live life to the fullest.

.

What I didn't mention in the bio was that I developed a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) two weeks after my amputation and was given had a 50/50 chance to live (again).  Yes, I have been down this road before.  Actually, at age 5, after I was hit by a car my heart and breathing did stop until my neighbor and uncle saved my life with swift CPR actions.

.
If you live with a DVT or blood clots you will understand the anxiety that comes along with it.  Learning to let go of what you have no control over is not easy, and is a full-time life-long practice.
.
In Nov of 2020, I had another blood clot and was put back on blood thinners.
Yesterday I decided to take myself to the Emergency room as a precautionary measure after spending the last 7 days worrying about the new pains I was experiencing and the increased swelling of my "good" leg.
.
I have learned to listen to my body and know that it is better to rule out a possible health threat than to lay with the anxiety of "what if's".  Why do we do that to ourselves, put off taking care of our bodies signs of "hey you need to pay attention to me and take care of me, I am the only vessel you have here on this earth?".
.
Why? Because we don't want to make waves around us, we don't want to ask for help and discover it was nothing, we don't want to ask for help is the bottom line.
If you are anything like me, you might hate asking for help.  But what I have learned as an amputee is that it is necessary.  Not because you are lazy or aren't trying, but because you are not the same person you were before the amputation.
.
The sooner we accept that and accept help, the sooner we can get on with living.  Getting help is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you care about living.  Accept help with a smile and be grateful for what you have in your life and life will give back to you.
.
So about my visit to the emerg... After 8 hours I received my ultrasound readings from the attending emerg Dr. and there is no new blood clot.
.
Great news. In order to be double safe (because of my health history), I have booked a follow-up with the thrombosis department next week to confirm the findings.
.
This is FANTASTIC news!  I spent 7 days in complete anxiety because I worried "what if".
.
And now I have to hold up the deal I made with my daughter, I said that "if I don't have a new blood clot that I would start moving more, starting with 10 min on my stationary bike and walking the dog more".
Baby steps to a healthy AND happy life.
